Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation  – a form of interpretation in which an interpreter speaks at the same time as a speaker. The speaker does not stop in order for the interpreter to render a message. On a regular basis, the interpreter works in a soundproofed booth with at least one colleague. He or she listens to the speaker through a headset and produces the message in the target language into the microphone almost simultaneously.

Consecutive – a form of interpreting in which the interpreter renders the interpretation every several sentences. When the speaker is speaking, the interpreter is taking notes, and after the speaker has paused, the interpreter provides the target language version of the message.

Sight interpretation – the interpreter renders the text written in a source language into spoken speech in the target language. This mode of interpretation is used e.g. in the court room or at a notary public, when the interpreter informs the interested parties of the contents of a document.

Liason - otherwise known as “sentence-by-sentence” interpretation. Short fragments (one sentence or a few sentences) are interpreted by the interpreter when the speaker takes a pause.
